October 7, 2008 Genevieve "Jean" Burman Share, a lifelong resident of Syracuse, died at age 90 on October 7, 2008, near Highland Park, Illinois, where she moved to be near her brother, Sheldon O. Burman, M.D. Jean was the daughter of Gussie Kaplan Burman and Aaron Burman, M.D., an early Zionist and president of the Onondaga County Medical Association. Jean graduated from William Nottingham High School at age 15. Her unusual musical gifts were apparent early on, and she became a piano pupil of Professor Kirk Ridge at the Syracuse University College of Fine Arts years before matriculating there. Murray Bernthal, a friend of 75 years and professor emeritus of violin at the University says, "Genevieve was the most talented student at Crouse College and then after a few years became my accompanist, and she and I performed innumerable concerts together." Jean became a prominent and influential figure in the citys musical life, appearing frequently on the concert stage as a soloist and accompanist. She was an active member of Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority and Sigma Alpha Iota, the National Music Honorary, a Board Member of Civic Morning Musicals and participant in Junior Pro Art and the Famous Artists Series. A skilled teacher, Jean inspired dozens of young students. Her vibrant personality attracted scores of friends, with whom she created a circle of mutual support. During World War II, while her husband, Nathan I. Share, was overseas, she directed womens activities at the Jewish Community Center and was womens head counselor at Bradley Brook Camp. In later life, she reached out to counsel fellow breast cancer survivors. Jean and Nat were lifelong members of Temple Adath Yeshuran, where Nat served on the board and was instrumental in the congregations move to its Kimber Road home. Nat was a community leader, highly regarded real estate attorney, assistant county attorney for Onondaga County and a decorated World War II veteran. The Share family cherished their summers with friends living on Tuscarora Lake while also residing in Syracuse, before Jean and Nat retired to Delray Beach, Florida. Genevieve is survived by three daughters, Barbara S. Kaplan of Philadelphia, PA, Marjorie L. Share of Washington, DC, and Laurie B. Share of San Anselmo, CA; sons-in-law, Joel Swerdlow and Marty Zwick; four grandsons, Aaron Benjamin Swerdlow, Paul Zachary Swerdlow, David Wolf Zwick and Joshua Daniel Zwick; her brother, Sheldon O. Burman, M.D., of Highland Park, IL., and seven nieces and nephews. A memorial service and musical concert will be held at the historic Notleymere Cottage, 4641 East Lake Road, Cazenovia, on Sunday, December 21, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow. Donations to CMM Junior Pro Art may be sent to Civic Morning Musicals, 124 Victoria Place, Syracuse, NY 13210. Birnbaum Funeral Service Inc.
