Ruth Trachtenberg Mizruchi, 91, an award-winning lecturer on Literature and Composition, at Syracuse University and LeMoyne College, longtime resident of Syracuse, died in Syracuse on Friday March 23rd. Born in Mt. Vernon, New York, she also lived in New Haven, CT and Cortland, NY. She earned a B.A. from SUNY Albany and an M.A. at Columbia. Married in 1952 to Professor Ephraim H. Mizruchi of Syracuse University, they recently celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary.
She is survived by her husband and children. She had a large family in Israel whose roots date back to the 18th c., and she and her husband traveled widely living in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and London, England. She was predeceased by her sister Dorothea Trachtenberg Mintz and three brothers. She was the Beloved Mother of Professor Mark S. Mizruchi and his wife Gail Mizruchi of Ann Arbor, MI, of David M. Mizruchi and his wife Marcia Mizruchi of DeWitt N.Y., and of Professor Susan L. Mizruchi and her late husband Professor Sacvan Bercovitch of Boston, MA. She had three grandchildren, Joshua Aaron Mizruchi, Alexander "Sascha" Philip Bercovitch, and Mikayla Mizruchi. She taught hundreds of Syracuse University and LeMoyne College students to write fluently and to appreciate literature. She was a member of Temple Adath Yeshurun for more than fifty years and an active member of the CNY James Joyce Club and of Hadassah.
Funeral services will be Monday, March 26th at 11 am at Sisskind Funeral Chapel, 3175 East Genesee St., Syracuse. Friends may visit with the family immediately prior to the service on Monday at the funeral chapel from 9:45 to 10:45.
Donations in her honor may be made to Temple Adath Yeshurun, 450 Kimber Rd., Syracuse, NY 13224. Shiva will be observed Monday night at 7PM at The Oaks, 18 Arbor Lane, Dewitt, NY 13214.
