Bernice R. Lessen, 85, of 101 Alpine Drive, DeWitt, died Monday at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Lessen was a life resident of the Syracuse area. She retired in 1970 from the housekeeping department of Van Duyn Hospital. She and her husband, Morris, previously operated the Silver Star Market on Delaware Street. He died in 1953. After retiring, Mrs. Lessen was employed part-time with Laubach Literacy. She was a member of Temple Adath Yeshurun and its Sisterhood and Temple Seniors Group. She also was a life member of Hadassah and a member of the Seniors Group of the Jewish Community Center. A daughter, Barbara Wallace, died in 1980. Surviving are a son, Sheldon J. of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; a sister, Dorothy Richman of Hudson; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Birnbaum Funeral Chapel. Calling hours are 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 1909 E. Fayette St. After the services, friends may call at the home of her grandson, Michael Wallace, at 5 Lyndon Road, Fayetteville.
