Martin Michaels December 11, 2009 Martin M. Michaels, of Fayetteville, NY, died peacefully in his sleep at Crouse Hospital on December 11, 2009. Born March 18, 1927, he was a native of Brooklyn, New York, he practiced law for 53 years in Syracuse as a partner at Michaels and Michaels, Attorneys at Law. He and his partners, his wife Beverly and son Edward, have represented generations of families in civil and criminal matters in the state and federal courts. He never retired, trying a case to judgment in the past several months, and dispensing advice even to his final days. Steeled by the Great Depression and the loss of his father in 1938, Mr. Michaels went on to graduate in 1944 from Lafayette High School in Brooklyn, New York. He then served in the United States Navy in 1945 and was training as a radar operator at the Great Lakes Naval Facility when World War II ended, whereafter he received an honorable discharge. He attended Syracuse University on the GI Bill, receiving his B.A. degree in business and accounting in 1951 and his Juris Doctor degree in 1956. He married Beverly A. Kreisberg of Monticello, New York, on September 8, 1951. He and his wife, who received her law degree as well from Syracuse University in 1953, settled in Syracuse and over the next 58 years raised three children and built a thriving law practice. He was a skilled negotiator and trial lawyer. He was a member of the Onondaga County Bar Association and served as chairman of the Onondaga County Bar Association Ethics Committee and as a member of the Fifth Judicial District Grievance Committee. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the American and New York Trial Lawyers Associations, and the New York State Academy of Trial Lawyers. He served as a precinct captain for President John F. Kennedys 1960 presidential campaign. At the same time, he was a true bipartisan and spent his whole life reaching across the aisle to get things done for those who lacked a voice. He will be missed greatly, but his spirit lives on in his loving family: his wife, Beverly; children Steven and Edward Michaels, Dr. Julie (Lee) Gelman and Anne Cohen; grandchildren Keston, Marc and Todd Aquino-Michaels, and Joshua and Sydney Gelman; brother Sol (Charlotte) Muchnik; brother-in-law Edwin Field; sister-in-law Rima (Philip) Mestman; sister-in-law Muriel Bresloff; nephews Marc Muchnik, and Carl and Dean Griffler; nieces Jessica (Norman) Cohen, Shelly and Deborah Field, Cathy Mestman, Joan (Jimmy) Gee, Anya (Grant) Evans, Leslie (David) Smith and Cindy Bresloff; and the Aquino, Nagle and Gelman families. Funeral services will be noon Sunday at Sisskind Funeral Chapel. Friends may visit with the family immediately prior to the service on Sunday, from 11 a.m. to noon, at the funeral chapel, 3175 E. Genesee Street. Burial will be in Adath Yeshurun Cemetery. Contributions in Martins memory may be made to the Syracuse Jewish Federation. Sisskind Funeral Service LLC 3175 E.
