Joe Krassenbaum, 97, died early Sunday morning at Menorah Park. He was a life resident of Syracuse, New York. Joe was an outstanding student who graduated at the head of his class from Central High School; majored in chemistry at Syracuse University; and then earned his degree in pharmacy from the University of Buffalo. In order to pay his tuition, Joe worked long hours at Crouse hospital. He spent a lot of time with his best friend, Arthur Trotsky. It was during his frequent visits to the Trotsky home that he met Fay Trotsky with whom he fell in love. During school he expertly played the violin. There he made three life-long friends with fellow pharmacy students, Sol Levy, Art Lieberman and Pierce Weinstein. In 1940, after graduating, he married the love of his life, Fay Trotsky. They traveled widely and decorated their homes with beautiful artifacts from these trips. Soon after graduating from pharmacy school, he established Kress Drugs. He was much loved and respected by his clients for his compassion, generosity and knowledge. Joe worked side by side with his son, Allen, until retiring. Joe and Fay lived happily at Croyden Lane and later at Knob Hill. He loved Allen, Karen and his grandchildren very much, and was very proud of their accomplishments. He also had a deep affection for his nephew, Tom, and his wife, Susan, and they exchanged visits frequently.
After Fay passed away, Joe moved to the Oaks. He lived there for a number of years, surrounded by his favorite furniture , pictures and artifacts and rooting SU sports. He deeply grieved the loss of his son, Allen, who died of cancer. A couple of years ago he became a resident of Menorah Park. He appreciated the care there, particularly from his caregivers, Reggie and Nicole. He remained lucid and sharp intellectually until a few weeks before his death, reminiscing about the past, telling jokes, and discussing news events. He was pre-deceased by his wife Fay; his sons, Howard and Allen; his parents, Morris and Fannie; and his brothers, Irving and Jack. Joe is survived by his daughter-in-law, Karen; his grandchildren, Mark, Adam and Sarah (Alex) Baker; his great-grandson, Jordan who he lovingly called his "little giant"; his nephews and nieces, Tom and Susan Travis, Charles and Linda Grossman, Pat and Jeff Rosenberg, Anne and Ronald Rosenthal, and Gary Begelman.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m., Tuesday, June 25, at Sisskind Funeral Chapel. Friends may visit with the family from 2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral chapel, 3175 E. Genesee Street. Burial will be in Adath Yeshurun Cemetery. Contributions in Joe\\\\'s memory may be made to The Foundation of Menorah Park for the cultural advancement of the residents.
