Donald M. Borsky, 71, of Syracuse, died Monday, April 28, 2008 at St. Josephs Hospital. Don was born in Jersey City, NJ to the late Rae and Theodore Borsky. He was a graduate of Nottingham H.S., received his associates degree from Auburn Community College, Bachelor of Science, Cum Laude from SUNY Oswego and a member of Kappa Delta Pi, the national Education Honor Society, earned a Master of Science from SUNY Cortland, and a masters in educational administration from Syracuse University. Don was employed for the Syracuse City District for 35 years until his retirement in 1996. During that time he taught social studies at George Washington, Levy, and the Continuing Education Program, was an elementary school teacher at Edward Smith, an instructional specialist at Central Tech and Levy. He was also a district wide secondary reading specialist and a teacher on special assignment for special programs in the Grantsmanship Office. Donalds military career began with him joining the N.Y. Army National Guard as a Private in 1953 while a senior in high school. He then served in the 249th and 104th Field Artillery. Achieved the rank of sergeant and then graduated from Officers Candidate School, commissioned as a second lieutenant (Artillery). He went on to graduate from Field Artillery/basic and advanced officers course at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, and the US Army Command and Staff College, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Served in various capacities in the Guard; artillery, forward observer, recon and survey officer, firing battery executive officer, motor officer, plans and training officer at divisional level. Was a detachment commander (Syracuse) for the Community Relations Detachment, whose mission centered on minority and women recruitment into the Guard. In 1997, Don transferred to the US Army Reserve and served as a command and general staff college instructor on the staff of the 1159th USAR School in Syracuse. Served as the detachment commander/assistant commandant of the 1159th USAR School, Syracuse and Webster. He was the personnel officer (DPCA) for the 1209th US Army Garrison (Mattydale) and then retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1985 with more than 31 years of service. Donald was a member of the Syracuse Teacher\'s Association, NYS United Teachers, Phi Delta Kappa, Reserve Officers Association of the United States, Retired Officers Association, served as treasurer of the Camillus Republican Club, served on the Camillus Republican Committee as a committee person, and 4th ward leader, Temple Adath Yeshurun. He was predeceased by his son, Theodore E. Borsky in 1993. Survived by his wife of 34 years, Ruth Oskin Borsky; daughter, Susan Borsky-Graber; son, Jonathan A. Borsky; three grandsons; sister, Sondra Fink; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be conducted on Thursday, May 1, 2008, 11:30 a.m. at Temple Adath Yeshurun, 450 Kimber Road, Syracuse. Friends may call on Thursday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Temple. Burial will be in Adath Yeshurun Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Theodore E.
