May 24, 2004 Leta Birnbaum, the beloved mother of Wendi, and Daniel, and wife of Irwin went to her eternal rest on May 24, 2004. She was the daughter of William and Belle Kupperman who predeceased her many years ago. She was a confirmed St. Lawrence River Rat where she spent summers among her many friends at Thousand Island Park, New York. She and her husband were inseparable high school sweethearts from the time they were sixteen attending Nottingham High School. She was a graduate of Syracuse University where she majored in English Literature. Her vision later became impaired by glaucoma, but she continued to be an avid reader. She devoured books on tape, and often reviewed the books she read on tape for the Thousand Island Park Library where she was an active member. She rode a tandem bicycle with her husband despite her visual limitations. She was a loving and courageous woman who knew how to live life with great gusto, wit, and elegance. She was asked to contribute her thoughts to a medical book by noted glaucoma surgeon, George Spaeth. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Birnbaum Funeral Chapel. Friends may call Thursday at the family residence from 4 to 7, and Friday, from noon to 2 at the funeral chapel, 1909 E. Fayette Street. Burial will be in Adath Yeshurun Cemetery. Contributions to The Thousand Island Park Library, Thousand Island Park, NY 13692; or Wanderers Rest, PO Box 535, Canastota, NY 13032. Birnbaum Funeral Service, Inc.
