April 8, 2007 Jean Birnbaum, 96, of Syracuse, died Sunday, April 8, 2007, at Iroquois Nursing Home. Mrs. Birnbaum was a special education teacher at the DeVillo-Sloan School until her retirement in 1980. She was a member of Temple Adath Yeshurun, Bnai Brith Womens Organization and the New York State Federation of Teachers. Mrs. Birnbaum was predeceased by her husband, Eliot Birnbaum, in 1996. Survived by her son, Dr. Michael D. Birnbaum; her devoted niece, Dr. Ruth V. Small, whom she considered and treated like a daughter; nieces Rosamond Adler, Helen Pierson, Evelyn Levy, Anne Corwin, Judy Marlowe and Joanne Kalin; nephew Edward Green; grandchildren Jennifer Streitwieser, Melissa Cooper Smith, Amanda Birnbaum, Deborah Curtis, Dr. Jacqueline Belen; and several great-grandchildren. Memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2007, at Birnbaum Funeral Chapel, 1909 East Fayette St. Friends may call at the chapel on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will be in Adath Yeshurun Cemetery.
