Melvin "Mel" Shapess

Mel Shapess died Wednesday at St. Josephs Hospital. Born on December 1, 1942, he was a lifelong resident of Syracuse. He graduated from Nottingham HS; served in the Coast Guard, stationed on the St. Lawrence and owned and operated Industrial Instrument Service until he founded Mel Shapess and Sons Heating and Cooling. He was a member of Congregation Beth Sholom-Chevra Shas. Mel was kind-hearted and generous to all people in need. He will be remembered as a loving and devoted father, always putting his childrens wants and needs before his own. Predeceased by his parents, Maurice and Gertrude Shapess. Funeral services will be at noon Friday at Sisskind Funeral Chapel. Friends may visit with the family immediately prior to the service, from 11 a.m. to noon, at the funeral chapel, 3175 E. Genesee Street. Burial will be in Adath Yeshurun Cemetery. Survived by his loving children: Gabrielle (Keith) Linzer, Bryan Shapess, and Seth Shapess; brothers, Robert (Sue) Shapess, Irving "Sonny" (Kathy) Shapess, and Michael (Meryl Novor) Meadvin, and his companion, Mae Labeef. Donations may be made to the CNY Food Bank and the Boys Scouts of America.
