Martha Hilda (Rudolph) Lerman
Martha married David Lerman in Utica in 1927, and they lived in Syracuse. On Scottholm Boulevard, her rock garden, containing flowers and trees new to the Syracuse area, was a popular Garden Society tour stop for many years. She was a member of the Syracuse Rose Society and the Syracuse Garden Club and organized the Sundial Garden Club. Martha was also a member of Hadassah. She and Dave helped raise money for the Syracuse Jewish Federation and also organized clothing and bond drives for Israel in the late 1940s. Martha chaired committees that helped Jewish refugees coming through the Port of Oswego, on Lake Ontario, to settle in the U.S. 982 refugees, mostly Jewish, were allowed to come from Italy to Oswego in 1944. They were placed in an internment camp for the duration of the war and were allowed to apply for citizenship in 1946. In 1960, Martha was honored at a dinner attended by Eleanor Roosevelt, as chair of the Syracuse Women\'s Committee for the State of Israel.
