Helen (Novick) Goldberg
March 27, 2007 Helen Goldberg, 97, of Syracuse, passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2007, at Crouse Hospital. Inspired by her son, Richard, Helen was a tireless advocate for people with developmental disabilities, setting the path for other families to provide their mentally retarded children with the same equal access to educational opportunities she accomplished through her own efforts. She was born in New York City but moved as a young girl to Lowell, MA, where she grew up. She received her bachelors degree from Pace Institute and then made Syracuse her hometown for the rest of her life, during which she worked as an accountant and an office manager into her early 80s. She was a congregant at Temple Adath Yeshurun. Helen is the daughter of the late Abraham and Minfred Novick. She was predeceased by her siblings, Leonard, Harold, Edward Novick and June Hirshberg; her husband J. Harry Goldberg; her son-in-law Lawrence Carmen and her granddaughter, Martha Carmen. She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Carmen; son, Richard Goldberg; grandsons, Mathew Carmen and Peter (Mary Beth) Carmen and great-grandchildren, Margaret and Jackson Carmen. Private services will be conducted at the convenience of the family. The family will receive visitors at the home of her daughter, Joyce Carmen, on Sunday, April 1, from noon until 3 p.m. Expressions of condolence in honor of her exemplary life may be made to the Arc of Onondaga Foundation, 600 Wilbur Ave, Syracuse, 13204. birnbaum funeral service inc
