April 16, 2008 Dr. Henry Cramer, 89, lifelong resident of Syracuse, passed away Wednesday, the result of a fall he experienced at his home last month. Henry was the youngest of the four children of Sarah and Philip Cramer. Henry attended Central High School, then Syracuse University, graduating in 1941 with a degree in history. There he met the light of his life, Constance Miller, whom he married in 1943. The couple lived in Cleveland, Ohio, while Henry attended Western Reserve University School of Dentistry. After graduation he served as captain in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Philippines from 1944 to 1946, honing his new dentistry skills on fellow soldiers. After the war Henry opened his own office on E. Genesee St., where he practiced general dentistry for 45 years. With a national reputation for state-of-the-art dentistry, Dr. Cramer was on the faculty at Upstate Medical Center and enjoyed mentoring young dentists. He felt strongly about preventive dental care and never turned a patient away for inability to pay. He co-founded a free dental clinic for the Boys Club in the 1950s. Dr. Cramer received a Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry in 1965. He was former chief of dental staff at Crouse-Irving Hospital. Professional memberships included Onondaga County Dental Society; NYS Dental Assn.; Life Member of the Fifth District Dental Society and the ADA; Assoc. Member Chicago Dental Society and the Boston Univ. Graduate School; Member Pierre Fauchard Academy-International Academy of Dentistry; American Association of Hospital Dental Chiefs; President and Charter Member of the Central NY Study Club; Century Club-NYU School of Dentistry; Life Member and former NYS Regent of the Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity; and the New York and American Academies of Dental Practice Administration. Dr. Cramer often wrote and lectured on practice management. He was a member of Congregation Beth Sholom-Chevra Shas, Temple Society of Concord and Temple Adath Yeshurun, Jewish War Veterans, Syracuse Jewish Welfare Federation, the JCC, YMCA, Old Boys Assoc.-Syracuse Boys Club. An avid golfer, Henry was a member of LaFayette County Club and Hunters Run Country Club in Boynton Beach, FL, where he and Connie spent many happy winters after retirement. From 1966 to 1982, the Cramers enjoyed boating on "Hank\'s Harem" in the Thousand Islands, where "Captain Hank" became a lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Henry\'s other love was SU sports, especially football, holding season tickets for well over 50 years. In his final years, Henry enjoyed reading, following the PGA, watching CNN and discussing world events with friends and family. He was predeceased (in 2004) by Constance, his loving wife of 61 years. He is survived by daughters Judith Cramer of Syracuse, Phillis Cramer (Phil Cochran) of Tavares, FL, Sherry Cramer of Hagerstown, MD, and Diana Cramer of Syracuse; grandson Ethan Cramer-Flood of New York City; numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Tarry, Eunice and Emma for their loving care and devotion to Henry. Service will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Birnbaum Funeral Chapel. Calling hour will be 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel, 1909 E. Fayette St. Burial will be in Chevra Shas Cemetery.
