Sidney "Red" Bluman passed away Sept. 18, 2010, at University Hospital, Syracuse, after a prolonged illness. He was born Nov. 30, 1925, in Syracuse. He was the youngest of six children born to Samuel and Ida (Galinsky) Bluman. After graduating from Central High School in 1943, he enlisted in the Navy. He trained in radio communications and was assigned to the Pacific Fleet on a Landing Ship-Tank in the rank of radioman 2nd class. His ship was involved in actions throughout the Pacific Theater, most notably at Okinawa. After his discharge from service, he enrolled at Syracuse University and graduated in 1950. Upon graduation, he was employed by the state of New York as an auditor. He worked in various positions within the Division of Taxation for 27 years, until his retirement. From there, he assumed the position of general manager of the Syracuse Branch, State Employees Federal Credit Union. He later worked in the New York State Division of Licensing in addition to operating his own business, D and S Tax Service. In 1966, he married Dolores Rosalie Webb and thereafter moved to DeWitt. One of his great talents was the ability to service and repair bicycles. In addition to his full-time employment, he was partners with his brother, Morris, and his uncle, Israel Hurwitz, in the Hurwitz Bicycle Store on East Fayette St. He played competitive badminton for much of his adult life. With Mike Novak as his partner, he won a Gold Medal for doubles in the 1997 Empire State Games Masters Division. He also enjoyed fishing with his children. He was a member of Temple Adath Yeshurun and enjoyed active participation in the congregations Minyon. He was predeceased by his daughter, Leslie, and siblings, Morris, Pearl, Belle, Sarah and Gertrude. Left to celebrate fond memories of his life are his wife of 44 years, Dolores "Dee" of DeWitt; his son, Eric, daughter-in-law, Trimble Augur, and three grandchildren, Adair, Tenney and Everett of Chestnut Hill, MA; as well as several nieces and nephews. Service will be 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at Birnbaum Funeral Chapel, 1909 E. Fayette Street. Friends may visit with the family from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the chapel. Burial will be in Adath Yeshurun Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested to Temple Adath Yeshurun Minyon Fund, 450 Kimber Rd., Syracuse, NY 13224. Birnbaum Funeral Service Inc.
