Samuel "Sandy" Stempler October 4, 2015 Samuel "Sandy" Stempler, 91, of blessed memory, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2015. Although a man of few words, the vision of his bright blue eyes, kind smile, and the treasure trove of wonderful memories will live on forever in the hearts and minds of those fortunate enough to have known him. Sandy was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1923, graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School and served as a 1st Lieutenant (Bombardier / navigator) in the Army Air Corps during WWII. After the war, married with two children, working during the day to support his young family, he went to college at night. He graduated from Polytechnic Institute with BS and MS Degrees in Electrical Engineering. During the first part of his career, he worked in the aero-space industry. Later on, under the administrations of Mayors Beam and Koch, he served as an Assistant Commissioner in the NYC Department of Environmental Protection and Director of its Bureau of Air Resources. He was an active member of Madison Jewish Center and several other civic organizations in the Marine Park section of Brooklyn. Once retired from city government, Sandy and the love of his life, Arliene, of blessed memory, enjoyed traveling, especially their annual trips to Israel. In his spare time, Sandy enjoyed reading, going to the theater and opera, cheering on the Yankees and the Mets, watching old westerns and helping his beloved Arliene with her printing business. Once both retired, they spent time traveling between residences in Brooklyn and Florida and visiting family and friends. In Florida, they were active members of Temple Torah of Boynton Beach. In 2002, they moved from their Brooklyn home to Syracuse to be closer to family and to enjoy the beautiful CNY summers and autumns. Early in their 69 years of marriage, Sandy established a beautiful tradition of presenting his wife Arliene with a single rose every Friday night. This is a tradition which has been passed down and followed by his son-in-law, Howard who, for the past 47 years, has been presenting his wife, Ellen with weekly Friday night flowers. Sandy was predeceased by his parents, Sarah and Michael; his sister, Roselyn, and his beloved wife, Arliene. He is survived by his son, Michael (Abigail Wenner); daughter, Ellen Weinstein (Dr. Howard); grandchildren, Tammy (David), Jessica (Gregg), Josh (Caroline), Danielle, Ilyse, Lisa, and Valerie and great-grandchildren, Jamie, Nathan, Sydney, Carly, Olivia, Max, Ava, Tessa and Evan. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 7, at Sisskind Funeral Chapel. Friends may visit with the family immediately prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral chapel, 3175 E. Genesee Street. Burial will be in Adath Yeshurun Cemetery. Shiva will be observed at Ellen and Howards home Wednesday, October 7, Thursday, October 8, Sunday, October 11 and Monday, October 12.
