Faye Byer, 83, of DeWitt, passed away Tuesday evening at St. Josephs Hospital. Faye was born June 28, 1926, in Newark, New Jersey, to Abraham and Dora Greenberg. A resident of Syracuse much of her adult life, Faye lived most recently at the retirement community of the Oaks at Menorah Park, where she was highly regarded and well-loved by all residents and staff. An avid reader, Faye spent large portions of each day reading novels by contemporary authors. Nora Roberts was a writer whose works Faye particularly enjoyed. Dining out with her family and friends was another favorite activity guaranteed to bring a smile to Fayes face. Faye cherished her family above all else and was known for the tremendous generosity she regularly displayed to her sons, daughters and grandchildren. Blessed with a keen memory for dates and numbers, Faye demonstrated the remarkable ability to rattle off the names, ages and birthdays of all the important people in her life. A devoted mother and homemaker, Faye raised five highly successful children before eventually taking a part-time customer service job at Sears Department Store in Fayetteville, a position she held for approximately eight years. Faye was a lifetime member of Temple Adath Yeshurun in DeWitt. Faye is survived by her former husband, Alan, and her five beloved children, Jeffrey (Mary Jean) Byer, Pamela (John) Matuszewski, Stephen (Mary) Byer, Laurie (Robert) Rutter and Debra (Chris) Macomber. She also leaves behind 13 wonderful grandchildren, whom she never tired of boasting about, Caitlin, Ronald, Jacqueline, Eddie, Kathryn, Nicole, Courtney, Bryon, Mathieson, Sophia, Cecelia, Colin and Maya. Calling hour will take place Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Birnbaum Funeral Home, 1909 East Fayette Street, Syracuse. Funeral services will immediately follow. At approximately noon, a luncheon reception will be held in the atrium at the Oaks at Menorah Park for family members and residents of the Oaks. Burial will be at Adath Yeshurun Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Faye may be made to the Oaks at Menorah Park, 18 Arbor Lane, DeWitt, NY 13214.
