Joan Gilels, 79, died peacefully Wednesday after a brief illness. Born September 29, 1936 in NYC to Max and Frances Regent she was a graduate of The Calhoun Girls School of Manhattan, and received her bachelors degree from Syracuse University school of education. She and her husband met at SU; it was love at first sight. They were married over winter break of their senior year. After graduating, she was a substitute teacher in the Syracuse Schools before pursuing her lifelong career in real estate. She was a member of Temple Adath Yeshurun. For the past 11 years she was the loving caregiver to her husband. Elliott died this past January. Joan will forever be remembered for her selfless devotion and caring to her extended and immediate family. She is survived by her children, Andrea (Jeff) Hoffman, Marc (Mary) Gilels, and Robyn (Danny) Aiello; her grandchildren, Lindsey, Felicia, Catrina, Matthew, and Max; and her brother, Stanley (Lori) Regent.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 8 at Sisskind Funeral Chapel. Friends may visit with the family prior to the service on Friday from noon to 1 p.m. at the Funeral Chapel, 3175 E. Genesee Street. Burial will be in Adath Yeshurun Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to The Leukemia Foundation, or Temple Adath Yeshurun. Shiva will be observed at Joans home Friday afternoon 3 to 5 and Saturday evening from 7 to 9 p.m.
