Elvira Amar, 91, born in Drama, Greece, a resident of Syracuse from 1950 until 1983 when she moved to Israel and returned to Syracuse in 1985, died Monday, November 10, 2008, at the Jewish Home of Central New York. She was a seamstress for Helmers Boutique on S. Warren St. until her retirement. Elvira was a member of Temple Adath Yeshurun and Hadassah. She was a survivor of the Holocaust and lived in Athens, Greece, where nuns hid her from the Germans and trained her to be a pediatric nurse, where she practiced for many years. She came to Syracuse to marry Isaac Amar, who became the love of her life and predeceased her in 2000. Survived by her cousins in Israel and many dear friends. Services will be conducted today, Tuesday, November 11, 2008, 2 p.m. at Birnbaum Funeral Chapel, 1909 E. Fayette St. Friends may visit today, 1 to 2 p.m. at the chapel. Burial will be in Adath Yeshurun Cemetery. Contributions to Temple Adath Yeshurun.
